You may miss it if you are not looking for it. Right in front of the Blue line on Western is a little restaurant called the Belly Shack. The Belly Shack is a great place to chill with friends and get a quick bite.
The place has metallic decor. With one giant picnic style table and little round tables surrounding it, one can just walk up, order, and sit or leave.
I went with my mom; we loved the food. I had the roasted chicken and a passion fruit lemonade. The flavors just burst in your mouth. The chicken was marinated in garlic and oregano with chorizo rice and chimichurri sauce. It was not too dry or too juicy; it was perfect. My mom had the Belly Dog, which is highly recommended by the employees and everyone else. The Belly Dog is not your traditional hot dog. It’s topped with crunchy egg noodles, pickled green papaya, and togarashi spiced fries. Yumm! I had a bite of the dog and immediately loved it.
The menu consists of things everybody would like. Tostones and lechon ramen had the perfect balance of the Puerto Rican spices as well as Korean. I never would have thought to put those two different tastes together, but it tasted delicious.
Pritzker students can just take the Armitage bus East and get off at western. Then they would walk about two blocks and it will be right in front of them, right under the blue line.
Although some have reviewed the spot with a really long wait, rude employees, and pricey meals, I would disagree with all of that. The employees were very friendly and even suggested some of their favorites. I ordered the meal that took the longest to cook, so I did wait a while. But my mom got her meal right away. The food was totally worth the price we paid.
I would totally recommend this place for people who are not afraid of trying new foods.
