“Rare”: Selena Gomez’s new album demonstrates growth and self-love

By Grecia Avila ’20

Selena Gomez, the American, female pop singer, songwriter, and actress, delivered her new album this year on Jan. 10. The pop artist released her third solo album as her comeback from her past album Revival which was released on Oct. 9, 2015. After a couple of years of rehabilitation and trying to recover from past trauma she develops her new album and creates a new chapter in her life.

After her second solo album, Revival, was released, Gomez went through a challenging journey, she faced a lot of struggles both mentally and physically. Gomez faced issues like depression, anxiety, and chronic disease that threatened both her career and her life. In 2017 she faced a serious surgery that concluded with her having a kidney transplant. As she tried to recover she focused on herself and determined to demonstrate her new self within her music career.

The album embraced the artist’s originality and her entire track displayed how she represents her music and herself as an artist. Her new music consisted of a mix of some old and new songs. Through her new tracklist, she demonstrated her confident and fun energy.  Her songs “Dance Again”, “Look At Her Now”, and “Fun” all demonstrate how after all her painful moments that she has faced she has now grown and found her new enlightenment. Gomez cleanses her heart and expresses through her songs “Let Me Get Me” and “Cut You Off” that she is ready to move on from all her past “demons” that hold her from expressing her true self artistically.

With her new album, Gomez is starting the new decade with a clean slate moving on from her past trauma and kicking off with new music and other new projects she is about to release like her new makeup line Rare inspired by her album. Gomez expresses how she is ready to let go of the heaviness and dance once again. After enjoying the album myself I highly recommend it
