Hush directed by Mike Flanagan features actors like Kate Siegel and Annalise Basso. Flanagan has directed movies like Oculus, Ouija: Origin of Evil and Gerald’s Game. Hush is not your typical horror film. It is a mix of horror, mystery, and drama. For those of you who don’t enjoy scary movies, Hush will deliver the perfect amount of terror without scaring you to death but rather keeping you on your toes.
Hush briefly explained is about a deaf woman named Maddie who is terrorized by a killer who enters her home. Maddie retreated into a home near the woods in a very solitary neighborhood because she needed silence and tranquility to finish writing her book. After, a masked killer realizes that she is alone, he enters her home determined to kill her. The masked killer becomes obsessed with Maddie once he realizes that she is deaf. He insists on prolonging her death and having some “fun” with her before deciding to kill her. He starts off by tormenting her by texting her pictures of herself as the film progresses. The motives as to why the killer wants to kill Maddie are unknown. He is portrayed as a psychotic man, who kills for fun.
Hush is so intriguing because there is little to no dialogue between the characters. Even though, it’s a silent movie and there are very few characters, it is a captivating film.
The sound effects that you would find in your typical horror film, aren’t as prevalent in Hush. Hush doesn’t aim to give you those jump scares but rather aims to keep you intrigued up until the last second. The main strength of Hush lies in the relatability of the film. The movie really makes you wonder what you would do if you were in the shoes of the main character Maddie. The movie has no special effects or dramatic sounds, it’s simply realistic.
As someone who doesn’t enjoy horror films, I was wonderfully surprised by Hush. It has been one of the best films, I’ve watched this year. I recommend this movie to anyone who is looking for a thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat and captivate you all throughout the movie.
