Feminist club: Smash the Patriarchy

By Barbara Garcia ’18

A Feminist, a person advocating social, political, legal, and economic rights for women equal to those of men and not man hating women. This is why Ximena Flores, a sophomore, created a club to construct a place where people can express their opinions and ideas on true feminist  thoughts.

Flores stated, “I’ve always advocated equal rights for everyone, and women’s rights and sexism isn’t something that we get to talk about in our classes at school.’’ Angel De La Rosa, a sophomore in the club, claimed, “to me, [a feminist is]  a person who truly is passionate about really stating that they believe in equality and are willing to express it.”

The club provides students a comfortable place to talk about important things and how people are unfairly treated in society. Being able to express your thoughts and opinions without being judged is something that this club praises. De La Rosa states how they also speak of  how society views  feminist compared to what it means when you label yourself a feminist and the importance of being educated before speaking.

Jesus Organes, a junior, explained that a feminist is someone who fights for equal rights .

Flores stated, “sexism and equal rights for women and men are important, especially for teens to have the ability to advocate for others.’’

Organes argued, men who do not support this should educate themselves and be feminist because it’s the core to achieving equal rights. The club contains boys and girls showing how anyone can support the term feminism because there is nothing wrong with being a feminist.

Cameron Torres, a junior, believes that feminism is the belief that all men and women are created equal and should be treated equally. But society tries to twist it into whatever the specific person desires.

According to Torres, there are many feminists that seem to fight for equality, yet mean to only put the women of society up on a pedestal again.

There can be issues where  society can seem hypocritical when it comes to this topic. There are many different points of views of this term in which people have strongly based opinions. Instead of keeping them to yourself joining the club can be a great start to becoming an advocate for equal rights. Smash the Patriarchy is a place where you can express how you feel with no one judging you but everyone supporting each other and the club takes place on Thursdays.
